There are various consequences of disrespectful care to women during labor and birth.

The AWHONN developed evidence-based recommendations to promote RMC in the United States.

These strategies were developed to address and reduce disrespectful maternity care, focusing on interpersonal and structural changes to improve maternal outcomes and experiences.

The problem of disrespect and abuse is multifactorial. Therefore, resources at multiple levels should be considered to promote RMC.

In 2019, the IMBCO and the FIGO released The International Childbirth Initiative (ICI): Twelve Steps to Safe and Respectful MotherBaby-Family Maternity Care.
