Promoting Respectful Maternity and Newborn Care

Welcome to the fourth module in the ERMC course. This module has been developed to further your knowledge of the consequences of disrespectful care for women during labor and birth and ways to promote ERMC. A list of resource requirements to promote ERMC is also provided, as well as an example of a case scenario of providing ERMC. Finally, this module will end with a post-course completion survey that includes reflection on equity and respect in maternity care.

Example of actions to promote RMC

Identify the causes why she is trying to close her legs during vaginal examination, for example, shyness, fear, cultural beliefs, and experience of gender-based violence.

Explain the findings of the examination.

Support her choices for labor and childbirth.

Gently touch her with permission and wipe her forehead with a cool cloth.

Encourage one companion to stay with Mrs. Geeta throughout labor and childbirth.

Regularly update her and her companion about what is happening and ask if she has any queries.

Interact with a companion to explain clearly how the woman can be well supported during labor and childbirth.

Ensure that Mrs. Geeta is aware of available mechanisms for addressing complaints.

Provide continuity of care from labor and childbirth to the immediate postpartum period.

Help her to breastfeed the baby immediately after birth
