Promoting Respectful Maternity and Newborn Care

Welcome to the fourth module in the ERMC course. This module has been developed to further your knowledge of the consequences of disrespectful care for women during labor and birth and ways to promote ERMC. A list of resource requirements to promote ERMC is also provided, as well as an example of a case scenario of providing ERMC. Finally, this module will end with a post-course completion survey that includes reflection on equity and respect in maternity care.

Behaviors that can increase the patient’s trust in the provider include:

Talking to the patient and not about them when in the patient’s presence (van der Pijl et al., 2020)

Giving mothers your full attention (McLeish & Redshaw, 2019)

Actively listening to patients by matching nonverbal communication, such as eye contact, with verbal communication (Dalton et al., 2020; Rodríguez-Almagro et al., 2019)

Assessing patients’ verbal and nonverbal communication for signs that they are developing trust in you and the care team (Dalton et al., 2020)

Taking the time to make small talk to get to know the patient and family (Dalton et al., 2020)

Approaching each circumstance with positivity, information, and hopefulness (Heideveld-Gerritsen et al., 2021)
