Phases Description of guides
Phase 1:
Self-awareness
Place yourself in a calm environment. Pay attention to your thoughts and emotions and write about your experience of disrespect and abuse of women during labor and birth or in maternity care settings.
Phase 2:
Description
Describe in detail the experience you were reflecting on: Include where that incident happened, who else was there, and why you were there. What were you doing? What were the other staff doing? What was the context, what happened? What was your role in this, what role did other people play, and what was the result? Identify the key issues within this description that you need to pay attention to.
Phase 3:
Reflection
Recall and explain your thoughts and feelings, including: What was the provider (e.g., midwife, nurse, doctor) trying to achieve? Why did they act like that? What were the consequences of their action for the woman and her family, for them (e.g., midwife), you, and the people they work with? How did you feel about this experience when it happened? How did the women feel about it?
Phase 4:
Knowing
Explore the experience from different perspectives: Identify the internal and external factors (environment) that influence the experience. What internal factors influenced the healthcare [HCP] provider’s decision-making and actions? What external factors influenced their decision-making and actions?
Phase 5:
Evaluation
During this phase, ask yourself what the HCP could have done differently and explore alternative strategies. Evaluate or make a judgment about what has happened, including what was good about the experience and what did not go so well.
Phase 6:
Learning
(synthesis)
How do you feel now about this experience? What did you learn from the situation? What actions do you plan to take forward? Has this experience informed your understanding of practice at a deeper personal level? In what way will this experience transform your personal and clinical practice perspective?
